Description
Atom Airsoft Sorbothane® Damper Pad and Protective Disc, 3.50 mm x 20 mm
The Atom Airsoft Sorbothane® damper pad and protective disc are intended for upgrading and maintaining electric airsoft gun gearboxes. The material helps absorb the impact generated when the piston assembly reaches the front of the gearbox, which can reduce mechanical stress, vibration and impact noise.
The damper pad can also be used when adjusting the angle of engagement, commonly known as AOE, between the sector gear and the piston rack. Correcting the engagement angle can help the first tooth of the piston meet the sector gear in a more controlled position, reducing stress on the piston teeth and gearbox components.
The included protective disc is installed on top of the Sorbothane® pad. It prevents the piston head from striking the soft damper material directly and helps distribute the impact across the surface of the pad.
The combined thickness of the Sorbothane® pad and protective disc is approximately 3.50 mm. Because gearbox, cylinder head and piston configurations vary, the final angle of engagement must always be checked individually after installation.
Benefits
- Helps absorb piston impact inside an AEG gearbox
- Reduces the short and sharp impact load transmitted to the gearbox shell
- Can reduce mechanical impact noise and vibration
- Suitable for adjusting the piston and sector gear angle of engagement
- May help reduce wear on the piston teeth and gearbox components
- Protective disc prevents the piston head from striking the Sorbothane® directly
Installation requires
- Sorbothane® damper pad
- Protective disc supplied with the damper pad
- Flexible instant adhesive, such as Loctite Flex Gel
- Tools required for disassembling and adjusting the gearbox
General installation procedure
- Disassemble the gearbox and clean the installation surface of grease, oil and adhesive residue.
- Glue the Sorbothane® damper pad onto the existing cylinder head pad or install it in place of the original pad, depending on the cylinder head construction.
- Glue the protective disc securely on top of the Sorbothane® pad.
- Allow the adhesive to cure according to the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions.
- Reassemble the cylinder, piston and sector gear temporarily and inspect the angle of engagement.
- Modify the piston rack only when necessary. Depending on the configuration, correcting the engagement angle may require removing the second piston tooth.
- Check that the piston moves freely and that the protective disc does not interfere with the cylinder, piston head or nozzle operation.

What is Sorbothane®?
Sorbothane® is a viscoelastic polymer developed for absorbing shock and vibration. Unlike ordinary rubber, the material both deforms under load and dissipates part of the impact energy. In an airsoft gearbox, this can spread the piston impact over a longer period of time and reduce the sharp peak load transmitted to the front of the gearbox shell.
Without an effective damping material, the piston’s kinetic energy is transferred to the gearbox structure in a very short impact. A conventional cylinder head rubber pad provides some cushioning, while Sorbothane® is intended to absorb and dissipate a larger portion of the impact.
Read more about Sorbothane®, gearbox impact damping and angle of engagement adjustment in the Atom Airsoft guide to angle of engagement and Sorbothane®.
Installation note: Installing the product requires gearbox disassembly and technical knowledge of electric airsoft guns. An incorrect angle of engagement, excessive material thickness or improper piston modification may cause feeding problems, reduced piston travel, premature wear or gearbox damage. Have the product installed by an experienced airsoft technician when necessary.
