Retro Arms CNC Stainless Steel Cylinder - Type D (AK/M16)
The Retro Arms CNC Stainless Steel Cylinder Type D is a precision-machined AEG cylinder designed primarily for configurations with inner barrels approximately 370-650 mm in length. The Type D volume makes it particularly suitable for long-barrel AEG builds commonly found in full-length M16, AK and similar configurations.
The cylinder is CNC-machined from 1.4541 stainless steel and features a thermochemically treated surface for increased wear resistance and corrosion protection. The precisely finished internal surface provides a smooth working surface for the piston head O-ring and supports consistent compression when used with correctly matched air-seal components.
Type D cylinder volume
Retro Arms recommends the Type D cylinder for inner barrels approximately 370-650 mm in length. Compared with more heavily ported cylinders, the Type D provides a large effective air volume suitable for longer inner barrels.
The ideal cylinder-to-barrel volume also depends on the inner barrel diameter, BB weight, piston stroke and overall air seal. The manufacturer's barrel-length range should therefore be considered a practical starting point when planning a build.
Stainless steel construction
The cylinder is manufactured from 1.4541 stainless steel using precision CNC turning. The surface receives a thermochemical treatment that increases surface hardness and gives the cylinder its dark finish while also helping protect it against corrosion.

A snug fit in a Retro Arms CNC gearbox is intentional. Retro Arms designs its cylinders and gearbox shells to fit closely together to minimise unwanted cylinder movement.
Maintenance
Retro Arms recommends lubricating the cylinder with suitable oil rather than heavy grease. Excessively thick lubricant can increase resistance against the piston head and negatively affect its movement.
