What are LiPo batteries?
Lithium ion polymer packs (LiPo) are the most efficient lithium ion based battery packs. The main advantage of LiPo batteries is their high power output relative to their size. For this reason even a small LiPo battery can deliver high current and they solve power delivery issues in guns with small battery spaces in one go. LiPo batteries also have no memory effect, so they can be recharged again and again without needing to be completely discharged. Frequent charging is beneficial for LiPo batteries.
When using LiPo batteries you must remember that the cells should not be allowed to discharge below 3 volts per cell. If the voltage drops below 3V per cell irreversible chemical reactions occur inside the battery which weaken its performance and in extreme cases destroy it completely. During storage a LiPo battery loses about 3 to 5 percent of its charge per month. For this reason LiPo batteries must be charged occasionally during long term storage to preserve their characteristics. A new unused LiPo battery is stored at about 70 percent of its total capacity.
In addition, a cell must not be charged above 4.2 volts. Overcharge protection is provided by LiPo chargers designed for LiPo batteries which can cut the current at the correct point. Overcharging can cause a LiPo battery to catch fire. Always use chargers designed specifically for LiPo batteries.
In use the average service life of a LiPo battery is 500 to 700 charge cycles. LiPo batteries tolerate cold significantly better than traditional batteries and therefore enable winter play with electric guns in a completely new way. Although they work in cold conditions they must always be charged at room temperature.
