The Atom Custom Impact series cylinder heads are CNC-machined from aluminum. Each Impact cylinder head comes with a factory-installed Sorbothane® shock-absorbing pad. The Sorbothane® pad helps prevent gearbox shell cracking thanks to its excellent damping properties. The Impact cylinder head also corrects the piston’s angle of engagement (AOE) with the sector gear. Due to this AOE adjustment, the piston must be compatible with the modified angle. For best compatibility, we recommend using Atom Custom Fusion series pistons with Impact cylinder heads.
Features:
- CNC-machined from aluminum
- Two O-rings ensure a perfect seal with the cylinder
- Sorbothane® pad protects the gearbox
- Adjusts piston angle of engagement (AOE)
- Damping pad and Sorbothane thickness: 5mm
- Compatible with Atom Custom Fusion pistons
Note: The color of the cylinder head may vary by batch.
What is Sorbothane® and how does it work?
Sorbothane® is a modern rubber-like specialty material developed in the UK, used in everyday products such as high-quality running shoes and industrial applications. Sorbothane has an exceptional ability to absorb vibrations and impacts. However, its material properties differ significantly from regular rubber.
When examining impact force over time (see the curve below), you can understand how Sorbothane works. The graph below compares Sorbothane’s ability to absorb impacts against regular rubber under constant force.
Scenario 1: No damping material (blue curve)
All kinetic energy from the moving part (piston) is transferred to the machine’s structure in a very short time. The gearbox shell experiences a sharp, short stress spike that can crack the shell.
Scenario 2: Original cylinder head rubber (yellow curve)
The rubber provides slight cushioning, reducing the stress spike.
Scenario 3: Damped with Sorbothane (red curve)
Sorbothane offers the best possible damping and eliminates the severe stress impulse on the gearbox.
