Description
Retro Arms Piston with 16 Steel Teeth
The Retro Arms Piston with 16 Steel Teeth is a reinforced AEG piston combining a lightweight fibre-reinforced polyamide body with a full spring-steel tooth rack. The current-generation design is intended for demanding gearbox builds where durability, low moving mass and a strong engagement surface are important.
The piston body is manufactured from PA6.6 polyamide reinforced with 30% carbon fibre and 5% molybdenum. Retro Arms has strengthened and revised the polymer body compared with earlier generations to improve its service life.
Hardened spring-steel tooth rack
The 16-tooth rack is manufactured from 14260 (54SiCr6) spring steel. The steel is annealed before machining to relieve internal stress, CNC milled and subsequently hardened.
Retro Arms specifies a tooth hardness of approximately 52-54 HRC. This provides a combination of hardness and flexibility intended to resist wear without making the teeth excessively brittle.
Reinforced low-friction piston body
The PA6.6 body contains 30% carbon fibre to increase mechanical strength, while the added molybdenum reduces friction. According to Retro Arms, the polymer body should be operated dry rather than lubricated with oil or grease.
Grease should only be applied to the steel tooth rack. This helps avoid contamination of the polymer body while still providing lubrication where the sector gear engages the steel teeth.
Compatibility
- Designed for AEG gearboxes using a standard piston configuration
- 16-tooth steel rack
- Suitable for compatible Retro Arms gearboxes
- Compatible with other AEG gearboxes that accept standard-dimension pistons
Always check that the piston moves freely in the gearbox rails before completing the gearbox assembly. Piston and gearbox tolerances can vary between manufacturers and models.
