How does piston weight affect performance?
Piston weight affects how consistently the rifle repeats each shot. A heavier piston moves and accelerates more slowly, but its greater momentum evens out variations in piston movement. Variations can be caused by changes in friction inside the cylinder or differences in how the piston head seals between shots. Increasing piston mass makes its velocity less sensitive to small changes, which can reduce variation in muzzle velocity.
A lighter piston accelerates faster, creating a higher momentary pressure peak inside the cylinder and transferring more energy to the BB. Energy stored in the spring can be transferred to the BB more efficiently because less energy is required to accelerate the piston. Using a lighter spring can make the cocking action faster and reduce the load generated by the piston's impact. However, a piston that is too light may increase muzzle-velocity variation if the system is not balanced.
The adjustable piston can be used to find a compromise between consistent performance, a light spring, a fast cocking cycle and long service life.
Setup tip
Chronograph the rifle in sets of 10-20 shots using different mass settings and BB weights, such as 0.40 g, 0.43 g and 0.45 g. Select the weight configuration that produces the desired average velocity in m/s with the smallest variation while keeping the cocking action and component movement smooth.
