Issues related to hop-up rubber lip length
Some hop-up rubbers (e.g., Maple Leaf – see image) have a longer lip. In such cases, the combination of the rubber and hop-up chamber may result in the hop-up rubber lip extending too far into the chamber, reaching the BB feed opening.
This often causes feeding issues or gun jams. The problem occurs because the lip reduces the opening through which the BB should pass in front of the nozzle. As a result, the BB may not reach the nozzle at all, or it may catch on the edge of the rubber lip and roll between the barrel and the BB, causing the BB to jam in the barrel and block the gun. This can often lead to gear or piston damage.
With the EPeS hop-up rubber lip distance adjustment shim, the length of the lip inside the chamber can be shortened, preventing feeding and jamming issues.
However, note that the lip can also be too short, which would result in insufficient sealing between the nozzle and the hop-up rubber.
