The Colt Commando series originated from the CAR-15 submachine gun and the XM177 series in the 1960s. In 1984, Colt developed a range of new short-barreled Commando submachine guns based on the M16A2, and the M733 was one of these models.
The new version of the Commando series initially introduced the M733 and M735 models, which are shortened versions of the M16A2 carbine 720/723/727 series. The M733 uses an A1-type fire control system with safe-semi-auto settings. Early M733 models featured A1-style windage-adjustable sights, later replaced by the A2-style solution.
All Colt Commando series models have 11.5-inch barrels, but only the M733 features the M16A2-style flash hider, which disperses the muzzle flash widely and can interfere with shooting. However, its compact design makes it ideal for close-quarters combat (CQB), which is why this model is still used by some U.S. SWAT teams. It is also used by the Israeli Defense Forces and French special forces.
The M733 model became widely known thanks to the movie "Heat" (1995). The film showcased the massive muzzle flash characteristic of the M733, and the director’s excellent camera work created a scene that remains one of the most iconic and impactful moments in Hollywood history. The M733 has left a lasting impression and achieved a timeless classic status.
